Performing Sports Centre
Rotterdam (NL)
The initial question for this project was not what to build, but where to build. In order to maintain the spatial qualities of the multifunctional square and to catalyse future developments in the area, the building was totally detached from the ground.
Performing Sports Centre
The quayside of the historical Schiehaven accommodates one of the largest multifunctional spaces of Rotterdam. This ‘multisquare’ enables the city to host large-scale open-air and public events. When the square is not use for these events, the square is used by local residents for sports and leisure. Despite the fact that most districts of Rotterdam are subject to super-visional planning, this part of the Schiehaven remains unnoticed.
The initial question for this project was not what to build, but where to build. In order to maintain the spatial qualities of the multifunctional square and to catalyse future developments in the area, the building was totally detached from the ground. By doing so, social life would be able to continue. The building simultaneously connects the existing dike to the harbour and connects the square to the somewhat messy area in the back.

The building simultaneously connects the existing dike to the harbour and connects the square to the somewhat messy area in the back. Users are guided through the building in a very natural way towards the top, combining both sports and education.
